To grow Florida Broadleaf Mustard Greens:

  1. Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-drained soil.
  2. Amend the soil with compost or manure before planting.
  3. Sow the seeds directly in the ground, about 1/4 inch deep and 6 inches apart.
  4. Water the seeds regularly, and keep the soil moist until they germinate.
  5. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to 12-24 inches apart.
  6. Fertilize the plants every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
  7. Water the plants regularly, especially during hot weather.
  8. Harvest the leaves as needed, starting with the outer leaves and working your way in.

Tips:

  • Florida Broadleaf Mustard Greens are a cool-weather crop, and can tolerate light frost.
  • To prevent bolting (the plant flowering and going to seed prematurely), plant mustard greens in the spring or fall, when the weather is cooler.
  • Mustard greens are susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, such as aphids, flea beetles, and clubroot. Keep the plants healthy and vigorous by watering them regularly and fertilizing them regularly.
  • Mustard greens can be eaten raw, cooked, or pickled. They are a good source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium and iron.

Harvesting:

Florida Broadleaf Mustard Greens can be harvested as soon as the leaves are large enough to eat. To harvest, simply cut the leaves off at the base of the plant. You can harvest the entire plant at once, or you can harvest individual leaves as needed.

Storage:

Florida Broadleaf Mustard Greens can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. To store, wash the leaves thoroughly and dry them well. Wrap the leaves in a damp paper towel and place them in a plastic bag.
