Tomatillo Seeds | Grande Rio Verde | NON-GMO | Heirloom | 50 seeds.

Grande Rio Verde is a variety of tomatillo that is known for its large size and high yields. It is a relatively new variety, having been developed in the early 2000s. Grande Rio Verde plants are medium-sized and determinate, meaning that they will stop growing at a certain height. This makes them well-suited for container growing.

To grow Grande Rio Verde tomatillos, you can either start seeds indoors or plant them directly outdoors. If you are starting seeds indoors, do so 6-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep in a moist seed starting mix. Place the seed tray in a warm location, such as on top of the refrigerator. Seeds should germinate within 7-14 days.

Once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves, transplant them into individual pots. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a few hours each day over the course of a week. Once the seedlings are hardened off, transplant them into the garden.

Tomatillos prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Space the plants 24 inches apart in rows that are 24 inches apart. Water the plants regularly, especially during hot weather. Fertilize the plants every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer.

Tomatillo plants typically begin to flower 6-8 weeks after transplanting. The flowers are self-pollinating, but it is helpful to plant two or more plants together to ensure good pollination. Fruits will begin to set about 2 weeks after flowering.

Tomatillos are ready to harvest when the husks have turned brown and split open. The fruits should also be firm and have a bright green color. To harvest, simply cut the fruits from the plant.

Tomatillos can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. They can also be frozen for up to six months.

Here are some additional tips for growing Grande Rio Verde tomatillos:

  • Tomatillos are relatively drought-tolerant, but they will produce more fruit if watered regularly.
  • Tomatillos are not heavy feeders, but you can fertilize them every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Tomatillo plants can be susceptible to pests and diseases, such as aphids, whiteflies, and fungal diseases. Inspect your plants regularly for any signs of pests or diseases, and treat them immediately if necessary.
