- Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. California Bluebells prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.
- Prepare the soil. Amend the soil with compost or manure to improve drainage and fertility.
- Sow the seeds. California Bluebell Campanula can be grown from seed or from plants purchased from a garden center. If planting from seed, sow the seeds directly in the ground in the spring or fall. Space the seeds 1/4 inch deep and 6 inches apart.
- Water the seeds. Water the seeds regularly, especially during the first week after planting. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
- Thin the seedlings. Once the seedlings have emerged, thin them to 1 seedling per 6 inches.
- Fertilize the plants. Fertilize the plants once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
- Water the plants regularly. California Bluebells are drought-tolerant, but they will bloom better if they are watered regularly. Water the plants deeply once a week, or more often during hot weather.
- Deadhead spent blooms. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage new blooms.
- Harvest the flowers. California Bluebells can be harvested throughout the growing season. To harvest, cut the flower stems just below the blooms.
