Martin House gourd.  10 seeds

Used for Art, Craft and decoration.

  1. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Gourds need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day and do not tolerate frost.
  2. Prepare the soil by adding compost or manure. This will help to improve drainage and fertility.
  3. Sow the seeds 1 inch deep and 3-4 feet apart. You can plant them in rows or hills.
  4. Water the seeds well and keep the soil moist until they germinate. This usually takes 7-10 days.
  5. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to 1 plant per hill.
  6. Fertilize the plants every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
  7. Water the plants regularly, especially during hot weather.
  8. Mulch around the plants to help keep the soil moist and suppress weeds.
  9. Harvest the gourds when they are ripe and have turned their mature color. This can take anywhere from 90 to 125 days, depending on the variety.

Here are some additional tips for growing gourds:

  • If you live in a cooler climate, you may need to start the seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date.
  • Gourds can be grown on a trellis or fence to save space.
  • If you are growing gourds for their decorative value, you can harvest them early and let them cure in a warm, dry place.
  • To cure gourds, simply place them in a single layer on a rack or shelf. Allow them to cure for at least 2 weeks, or until they are hard and dry to the touch.
